Balian Village

Located on Bali’s west coast in between Kuta and Medewi, Balian is best known as the Bali of yesteryears – a small coastal village with a nice beach, a cool vibe, and tourist-free. But even with the addition of accommodations and restaurants in the area with the influx of surfers who come from all over the globe for Balian’s waves, Balian still retains its Old Bali charm.

We soaked up the magic of the black sand beach that sparkled like diamonds or stars beneath our feet. And above us, the night sky was also filled with stars. We were in between galaxies. And what do you do when the universe envelops you? You sit quietly and listen. And so we did.

After a while, Susie, the masseuse came into our little secret universe. But what we didn’t know was she had a secret of her own. Susie used coconut shell to dig deep into the muscle tissue while at the same time giving your skin a good scrub. After fabulous massage, we headed out to get dinner at the restaurant.

A young girl named Indra was in charge of the cooking. She was great, slow, but the food that came out her kitchen was amazing. I guess it’s true that good things come to those who wait, huh?

Early the next morning, we set out for the cliff overlooking Balian beach. We sat on a grassy hill above the beach for an hour just talking quietly, meditating in our own way, and reflecting about the beginning of our Bali adventures.

Under the gentle magic of Old Bali, it seemed that the stars, the universe and the gentle rolling waves had worked balance in all of us.
